2 More Commonwealth Medals for Murakwai

Day 2 at the Commonwealth Championships in Cardiff was for the Cadets & Juniors. Jodie Kee performed superbly winning her first 3 fights all by the maximum score defeating players from Scotland, Canada then Wales to secure a place in the final. She unfortunately lost to another Canadian leaving her with a well deserved silver medal. James Reid won Murakwai’s second medal of the day, he claimed Bronze in the Cadet u60kg category. Ashleigh Newton from Longtower was Northern Ireland’s only other Medallist today, she claimed Bronze in the Cadets u44kg category. Daniel Mayhew narrowly missed out on a Bronze medal in the Cadet u73kgs finishing in 5th place while Rory Kelly finished in 7th place. Congratulations to all NI players who fought today & good luck to the seniors who fight tomorrow!

Barry McCune – Commonwealth Champion!

Day one of the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Cardiff saw the Masters take to the mat. Northern Ireland claimed 1 Gold, 3 Silvers & 17 bronze medals. Barry McCune stole the show claiming NI’s only Gold, also from Murakwai, Adam McCune took silver while Ricky Sloane & Scott Mayne won Bronze medals! Congratulations to all of Team NI!! Good luck to the Cadets & Juniors who all fight tomorrow & the seniors who fight on Wednesday…

14 Players head to Cardiff for the Commonwealth Championships!

Good luck to all Murakwai players who head to Cardiff this week for the Commonwealth Judo Championships! We have 7 Masters competing on Monday – Scott Mayne, Adam McCune, Iain Kelly, James McCullough, Barry McCune, Robert Morrow & Ricky Sloane; Daniel Mayhew, James Reid, Rory Kelly & Jodie Kee fight on Tuesday in the Cadet & Junior Categories, then Ian Mitchell, William Cully & Ricky Mayne compete on Wednesday in the Seniors. Good luck to the entire NI Squad competing this week!

3 Irish Schools Medals

3 Murakwai players travelled to Dublin for the Irish Schools Judo Championships on Saturday. James Reid continued his good run of form by adding the Irish Schools title to his Ulster Schools title from last month. For the 2nd tournament in a row, Conor Kelly and Matthew Elliott ended up facing each other in the final, Matthew defeated Conor to claim Gold in the Ulster Schools but this time Conor came out on top to claim the Irish Schools title leaving Matthew with the Silver. Congratulations to all 3!
