5 out of 5 on day 2 of the Leinster Open

All 5 players who fought for Murakwai today all returned home with medals. Matthew Elliott followed up his success yesterday where he won the Irish Open Wrestling Tournament by winning Gold in the minor boys u45kgs. In the same category, Conor Kelly claimed the Silver after narrowly losing out to Matthew in the final. There were Silver medals for James Reid (Cadet u60kgs) and Caitlin Hull (Cadet u52kg) and Bronze medal for Kiah Reid. Congratulations to all!

6 Medals from 4 Players at Leinster Open

Well done to Alan Kerr who won the junior men’s u90kg and junior men’s open weight today in Finglas, Dublin at the Leinster Open, Alan also narrowly missed out on a medal in the seniors finishing in 5th place. Ricky Mayne claimed Bronze in the u73kgs and William Cully had a disappointing debut as a Murakwai player, William injured his shoulder in his 1st fight & had to pull out. Abdul Mohamed was arguably the player of the day, he claimed Gold in junior u66kgs, silver in the junior open weight & bronze in the senior u66kgs. Well done to all 4 & good luck to James, Kiah, Conor, Matthew & Caitlin who all fight tomorrow!

1st Dan for Dan!

15 year old Daniel Mayhew earned his 1st Dan Black Belt today with an impressive 50 points in one day. He won 2 fights by the maximum Ippon score which earned him his line-up where he defeated 3 opponents in a row all by Ippon! It was also a good day for Alan Kerr who won several fights to gain the remaining points he needed for his 2nd Dan. Read the rest of this entry »

3 New Murakwai Coaches!

Congratulations to Iain Kelly, Alan Kerr & Kirsty Kee! Both Iain & Alan completed their assessments today for their UKCC Level 2 course while Kirsty passed her UKCC Level 1 assessments. Well done guys!

Cameron Kelly Slams his way to Gold!

Cameron Kelly was Northern Ireland’s star performer at the Heart of England Judo Championships yesterday in Walsall. Cameron won all 4 of his contests by the maximum Ippon score with several impressive throws to claim Gold in his first event in his new weight category (-60kgs). Kiah Reid was Northern Ireland’s only other medallist claiming Bronze in the under 32kg category. There were several other Murakwai players representing NI who all impressed but unfortunately finished outside the medals, these included Conor Kelly, Robyn Kelly, James Reid, Daniel Mayhew, Aaron Drury, Caitlin Hull, Rory Kelly, Alan Kerr, Ian Mitchell & Richard Mayne. Congratulations to the entire NI Squad who participated in one of the UK’s biggest domestic tournaments.
